Will the app stores approve a dating app?

Yes, provided the safety basics are present: reporting, blocking, moderation, age gating, and a privacy policy that matches what the app actually collects. Rejections in this category are usually about missing those, not about the concept.

Should we charge from day one?

The cold start problem is the whole problem

A dating app with a hundred users in a city is useless to all hundred of them. Every successful launch we have seen solves this by going deliberately narrow: one city, one campus, one community, one interest. Wide launches spread the same users so thin that nobody sees anyone worth matching with.

This changes what you build first. Location radius, invite mechanics, and a waitlist that only opens an area once it has enough people matter more at launch than a clever matching algorithm. We would rather ship a small app that feels busy than a big one that feels empty.

Matching, and why the algorithm matters less than you think

Early on, distance, recency, and basic preferences outperform anything sophisticated, because you do not yet have the behavioural data that makes ranking smart. Building an elaborate matching model before you have users is effort spent on a problem you do not have.

What does pay off early is the moment of the match itself. That is the emotional payoff people screenshot and tell friends about, so it deserves real design attention. The technical piece underneath is straightforward: swipe records, a mutual check, and a notification that arrives immediately.

Safety, moderation, and store approval

Both app stores apply extra scrutiny to dating apps, and they will reject one that lacks the basics. You need reporting and blocking on every profile and message, a way to review reports, photo moderation, age gating, and a plan for handling accounts you remove. This is not optional polish, it is the price of being listed.

Beyond compliance, safety features are retention features. People leave apps where they feel unsafe faster than they leave apps that are boring. Location fuzzing rather than exact positions, controls on who can message first, and photo verification are the ones we recommend building in from the start.

Keeping people once they match

Matches that go quiet are where dating apps lose users. The features that help are the ones that give people something to do together: group rooms around interests, short video, prompts, and in-app calling so people can talk before meeting.

These also give you reasons to send notifications that are not nagging, which matters because the alternative is pushing people to open an app where nothing has happened.
